March Madness

March began with a big mess, a necessary mess, but a mess nonetheless. The flooding problem in our basement window well needed to be fixed, so we had to have the concrete jack hammered and removed.

Underneath we found that the the dirt had settled and created a big cavern where the water would collect and flood into the window well. The contractor that back filled our foundation did not compact the dirt as he should have (i.e. not at all), and thanks to him we had a huge problem on our hands. He has been doing the work of removing the concrete, replacing the window well, and refilling the dirt for free since it was his fault, but he is doing it at a snail's pace. (We are now in June, and he is still not finished!)

This picture shows the airspace between the concrete and gravel base. There had been about a foot of settling.

Here you can see how far the dirt settled in the corner where the window well and foundation meet. It was a good 18 inches down. That was where all the water was flowing into the window well.

 What a mess!

On a fun note, Megan had a biography project due in March. She chose to read about Claude Monet. They had to write a monologue and create a puppet. They had to memorize the monologue and use the puppet to say it in front of the class. It was a lot of fun creating her puppet together. She did a great job on her performance and enjoyed learning about Monet's artwork.

St. Patrick's Day quickly approached, and Megan kept reminding me about the "Magic Treasure Box." This is a box that we have had since the kids were little that they put out the night before St. Patrick's Day. Then the "leprechauns" fill the box with treasure and hide it. If the humans can find it the next day, the treasure is theirs to keep. However, unbeknownst to the leprechauns, they leave a trail of green wherever they go. They leave many false trails, so the seeker has to try them all. I think it's cute that Megan still loves all the holiday traditions we started when they were little, and insists on continuing them...so what's a tired, old leprechaun to do?

Those sneaky little guys hid the loot in an extra dresser we are storing in our basement!

Brooke had a group assignment in Health Science to create an amusement park with a theme of the digestive system. I was thinking how crazy their teacher was for making that dumb of an assignment, but I was pleasantly surprised at how creative Brooke and her group were. They had to make a map of their attraction--"Gastro World Fair"--with descriptions of all the rides and stands.

Here are some of my favorites...the "Mastication Station" where you could board the train and go to all the attractions...

...the rides "Esophogeal Wheel," the "Ruginator," and "Intestines of Insanity."

Liver on a Stick (like Hot Dog on a Stick) was one of their food stands (gross!). Another was IHOP--International House of Pancreas. I thought they did a great job and were extremely witty with all their names and descriptions. Of course, they got an A!

Birthday and Surgery

February brought my 42nd birthday. Mike took me to see Brian Regan, our favorite comedian, at Abravenal Hall the Thursday before. My actual birthday fell on a Sunday, so the family cooked dinner, and Danika made decadent individual chocolate cheesecakes. We played cards after dinner. It was a great birthday--lots of laughs and good food.

Two days later Mike went in for his 4th back surgery at the University of Utah Hospital. The surgeon went in and removed scar tissue to try and help decompress the nerve on the left side of his lower back.
Pre-Op

 Post-Op

 Going home--glad to be walking!

Convalescing at home--gotta have all his tech toys (laptop, iPad, and mp3 player)

Along came Valentine's Day. Danika and Megan made Linda's sugar cookies. Our very favorite recipe! Mmmmm.

And Now...Brooke Deserves Some Accolades Too

My sweet Brooke is the middle child, which means she often gets overlooked. However, she is also doing great and wonderful things. She has been taking guitar for about 3 years now. She loves to sing, and has a beautiful voice (she thinks I just say that because I'm her mom). She is deathly afraid of performing in front of people. So Mike volunteered her to perform at our ward talent show. She was super stressed, and almost backed out. But she faced her fears and went through with it. She played and sang "Mean" by Taylor Swift. So brave!

Here is the video, which is poor quality because it was taken from the back of the gym with my phone...

We Interrupt This Blog for an Important, Very Long, Catch-Up Post...Mostly About Danika and Megan

Last week was a busy one! Actually, the entire last month has been eventful. Let's bring everyone up to speed, shall we?

Danika turned 18 on April 11. All she wanted to do was go shopping for clothes (which we did) and go get frozen yogurt at Menchies...what goofballs :)

Prom was on April 14. I finished the dress Grandma started while we were in Missouri for Spring Break (more on that in another post) just in time...I was sewing literally up until the last minute. That's pretty much how I roll on most things! It was pretty nerve-wracking, but it held together, and she was comfortable! That was her first criteria: comfort. (I love that kid...she is not at all high maintenance!). Danika has had enough of big, poofy, uncomfortable dresses. She wanted an Empire waist, and for it to look kind of like one the dresses in the movie "Emma." It turned out pretty nice, but WAY above my sewing skills! It is much prettier in person though, I think.

She went with Bryton Wells, a guy she has been friends with all through high school. He is a good kid, so we were all happy and comfortable with it :) We were a little worried that his tux wouldn't match, but when he showed up he looked fantastic--very classy, indeed.

Danika successfully pinned on the corsage without puncturing Bryt :)

Cute, cute couple! (But they're just friends...really!)

On May 2nd, Danika received her Young Women Medallion. She has had everything done for a couple of years except for the last 2 Virtue requirements and reading the Book of Mormon. She finished earlier this Spring. She was awarded her necklace at a recognition night for the graduating Laurels. I was glad she finished (there were times I doubted, I must admit). Her favorite thing was reading the Book of Mormon all the way through by herself. We actually did see a difference in her while she was reading because she was ahead of us in our family reading. She would make comments sometimes that were interesting and showed she was gaining her own understanding of it. Those moments are the payoff of parenting. Mike was out-of-town, so I was the only one there to say a few things about her. All the girls receiving their awards had to do a display table of some of their projects.

May 8th was Mike's birthday...he was out of town. Mother's Day came and went. I can't remember much about either, except my family made dinner for me...yay!

Next came Megan's 12th birthday on May 15...NO MORE PRIMARY! She couldn't wait to get into YW's with her friends. Before school she opened her gifts from Brooke (Beatles shirt) and Danika (tote bag).

After dinner Megan opened the rest of her presents from Mom and Dad--a new Sunday outfit, sandals, a couple of t-shirts, and some new socks.

Then we went to Sonic for slushies and malts. It was super easy and laid back. Thankfully none of my kids really like cake, so they never ask for it, because I am a horrible cake maker. Happy Birthday Megan!

May 20 was Seminary graduation. Again, Mike was out-of-town. Heidi Francis asked Danika to accompany her in a musical number. It was a pretty hard piece--4 sharps! But she did great! Here are all the Seniors from our ward...

Friday June 1st Megan graduated from D.A.R.E. and 6th grade. She had a great year with Mrs. Austin, who happened to be her 5th grade teacher at Snow Horse. Mrs. Austin moved over to Heritage last year and Megan got lucky enough to get her again. She was super happy about that because we moved halfway through the year, and she was sad to leave her awesome teacher.

Best buddies--Kassidy Webb, Anna Francis, and Megan.

Later that day we got to attend Danika's graduation at the Dee Events Center at Weber State. There were 701 kids graduating. Grandpa Allen was in Utah visiting so he was able to come also. We are very happy for Danika and all she has accomplished! She's off to Southern Utah University in the Fall. She received a half tuition scholarship for 4 years, so we are very proud of her!

The Fab Five--these guys are always together! (Carly, Bryton, Jordyn, Lincoln and Danika)

These three call themselves "The Tricycle" because Lincoln and Jordyn are a couple, which leaves the three of them as "3rd wheels."

Danika and Karter Chisholm--Jr. Prom dates and both lifeguarding at Cherry Hill this summer.

A little attitude from my girl!

Proud Grandpa and dad (even though the sun's in his eye)

Happy it's over!  One down, two more to go!

Whew! Glad I got that all down in writing. It's been a blur, but I am really happy for my kids--they are awesome!
